A retired Oakland Police captain is recovering after being shot during an attempted robbery.

On Thursday, authorities confirmed Ersie Joyner had undergone surgery and is in stable condition in the ICU. Officials said Joyner was pumping gas at a Chevron station when he was approached by three individuals who tried to rob him at gun point.

A struggle ensued before Joyner pulled out his own gun and opened fire, killing one of the suspects. Two of the suspects then returned fire, injuring the former captain.

Oakland’s Chief of Police Leronne Armstrong stressed the surge in crime is sweeping the Democrat-led city.

The Oakland Police Department will hold a media availability regarding Thursday’s robbery and shooting that resulted in a homicide. One additional victim was shot and wounded.
