Florida Governor Ron DeSantis slammed the charges against former President Donald Trump saying that they are “un-American.”

A grand jury in New York City, voted to indict 45th President Donald Trump, making him the first president to be criminally charged in American history. The decision was made over an alleged hush money payment made to adult film star Stormy Daniels.

The charges have not yet been made public.

Federal prosecutors in the Southern District of New York had previously decided not to charge Trump, and the Federal Election Commission (FEC) had also dropped its investigation into the matter in 2021.

DeSantis (R-Fla.) slammed the charges saying that they are “un-American” and that his state “will not assist” in any extradition request made by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg.

The Florida Governor, who is thought to be strongly considering a presidential run himself, said that he made his decision due to the fact that there are “questionable circumstance” surrounding Bragg, and that this was a “weaponization” of the system in order to target political opponents.

“The weaponization of the legal system to advance a political agenda turns the rule of law on its head,” DeSantis tweeted Thursday. “It is un-American. The Soros-backed Manhattan District Attorney has consistently bent the law to downgrade felonies and to excuse criminal misconduct. Yet, now he is stretching the law to target a political opponent.”
